What Is a Registered Behavioral Technician (RBT)?

A registered behavioral technician is a paraprofessional who works in ABA, providing direct implementation of behavior-analytic services. These services are designed to improve socio-emotional, communicative, and adaptive skills for individuals with autism and related conditions.

RBTs work closely under the supervision and guidance of Board Certified Behavior Analysts® (BCBAs®). They are critical in delivering ABA services, conducting one-on-one therapy sessions, implementing behavior plans, collecting data, and supporting individuals to achieve their individualized goals.

RBTs are practitioners and advocates, providing compassionate care and promoting the enhancement of life quality for the individuals they serve. As an RBT, you will have the opportunity to transform lives, one interaction at a time.

Ready to take the next step in your career? Join us at A Gem of Joy and embark on a meaningful journey as a registered behavioral technician.

How to Become a Registered Behavioral Technician

Embarking on a journey to become a Registered Behavioral Technician involves a series of steps to meet the necessary qualifications:

  • Initially, you must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Secondly, complete a 40-hour training course covering the RBT Task List, professional ethics, and other essential job elements. This training often takes place over five days but can be spread out over a longer period, depending on the provider.
  • Upon completing the training, you must pass a comprehensive competency assessment administered by a BCBA. This assessment ensures you can proficiently perform the tasks on the RBT Task List.
  • After passing the competency assessment, the final step is to pass the RBT exam administered by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board® (BACB®).

Once you have successfully completed these steps, you are well on your way to making a significant difference in the lives of individuals as a registered behavioral technician.
