What Is Verbal Behavior Therapy?
VB therapy is a highly impactful tool for learners who may struggle with communication. Verbal behavior therapy is a method that can help learners understand the meaning of words and how to use them in a context to improve language skills. The individual is able to learn that words can help get them their desired objects or results.
This approach aims to educate people on the reasons for using words and how they can effectively convey their ideas through language. Verbal behavior therapy focuses on these word types (called verbal operants):
- Mand – A request
- Tact – Labeling items or their attributes
- Echoic – Repeating what is said
- Intraverbal – Responding to a question
When starting VB therapy, clinicians first assess a learner’s current communication level. This helps the clinician create an individualized approach for each learner. Next, the team will focus on specific verbal operants when teaching language—ensuring that learners are able to use their words (spoken words or alternative methods) to request, describe, and engage in social interactions with others.
Verbal behavior therapy helps unlock communication and language development potential by addressing each person’s unique needs and strengths.
